“The True Rahmah” – Ibn Qayyim (rahimahullaah)

“The True Rahmah” – Ibn Qayyim (rahimahullaah)

From the speech of the noble Imaam Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah
“The True Rahmah”

“From that which is befitting to know is that “Rahmah” is a characteristic which requires the bringing about of that which is beneficial and good to the servant. This is the case even if the soul dislikes it and it is difficult upon it. This is the true “Rahmah”. The most merciful of the people to you is the one who is hard/difficult upon you with regards to bringing about that which is to your benefit and repelling that which is harmful from you.

Therefore from the mercy of the father for his child is that he compels his child to observe discipline with regards to the attainment of knowledge and the practice of it. He (the father) is hard upon his child with regards to that by way of disciplining the child and other than that. Also he is hard upon him by way of preventing him from the fulfillment of his (evil) desires which will return to him as that which will harm him. Whenever the father is negligent in that affair with regards to his child, that is a result of a lack of his “Rahmah” for him. Even if he (the father) thinks that he is having “Rahmah” upon him, giving him comfort and giving him relief, this is “Rahmah” that is accompanied with ignorance. Similar to the “Rahmah” of the mother.

Based upon this, from the completeness of the “Rahmah” of the Most Merciful of those who show mercy, He (Allaah) sent down upon the servant different types of trials and test. Indeed He (Allaah) is most knowledgeable of that which is of his benefit. Therefore His (Allaah) testing of him (the servant) and preventing him from many of his goals and desires is from His “Rahmah” for him. However the servant due to his ignorance and oppression he falsely accuses His Lord (of that which is not befitting) for His testing of him. He (the servant) doesn’t know His (Allaah’s) goodness to him by way of His testing him with test. There has come in the narration:

“When the one who is being tested is supplicated for:-Oh Allaah have mercy upon him- Allaah the Most High says -How can I have mercy upon from something which I am having mercy upon him with-”

In another narration:

“Indeed when Allaah the Most High loves His servant, He protects him from the worldly life, its goodness and its desirable affairs just as He protects one of you from his sickness”

This is from the completeness of His “Rahmah” for him (the servant) and not from His stinginess upon Him. How could this be when He is The Most Generous The Glorified. He is the one who possess all generosity. The generosity of the creation in comparison to His generosity is less than an atom in the mountains of the world and its sand.

From His “Rahmah” with His servants:

His testing of them with the commandments and the prohibitions as a means of a “Rahmah” and protection. He (Allaah) has no need for them in that which He has commanded them with, for He is The Self-Sufficient, The All-Praiseworthy. Likewise this is not stinginess from Him upon them in that which He prohibited them from, for He is The Most Generous and The Most Noble.

From His “Rahmah”:

He disturbs and spoils the worldly life upon them so that they do not seek to inhabit it (forever) and become at ease with it. Also (this is done) so that they desire the established bounty in its abode and proximity. Therefore He drives them to that with the whips of trials and tribulations. He prevents them in order to give them. He test them in order to pardon them. He causes them to die in order to give them life.

From His “Rahmah” for them:

He warns them against Himself in order that they do not become deceived by it and as a result of that, they deal with Him (Allaah) in a manner which is not not befitting for them to deal with Him. It is just as He stated:

“Allaah warns you against Himself and Allaah is merciful to His servants” (Soorah Aali ‘Imraan: 30)

More than one from amongst the Salaf stated:

“From His mercy with the servants is that He warned them against Himself in order that they do not become deceived by it”.

Please see attached a PDF document that I have mapped detailing the important principles related to Tawheed al-Asmaa was-Sifaat.

It is a good, simplified introduction to the principles that help a Muslim to understand the Names and Attributes of Allaah.

I handed these out on the Friday Class to help those who attend understand this very important field of study.

Are the Aayahs About Allaah’s Attributes Regarded as Being from the Precise or Unspecific Aayahs [Muhkamaat and Mutashaabihaat]?

by Ahmed Abu Turaab

Questioner: A questioner is asking whether the aayahs and hadiths that talk about Allaah’s Attributes are from the precise [muhkamaat] aayahs or hadiths] or the unspecific ones [mutashaabihaat, cf: Surah Aali-Imraan 3:7] … as the Shaikh of Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah said …

Al-Albaani: From one angle, namely in that which is connected to the exact nature [i.e., the ‘how?’] of those Attributes, they are from the unspecific aayahs [al-mutashaabihaat, but] from the other angle they are not [regarded as being from the unspecific ones but rather are from the precise [muhkamaat] aayahs] in that they have a clear meaning.

As we just said now that the saying of the Salaf, ‘Pass them on/relay them as they have come,’ i.e., as they are understood in the Arabic language and we mentioned the example of [Imaam] Maalik about that previously too. So in this sense they are not from the unspecific [aayahs], i.e., in that they have a [linguistic] meaning well-known in the Arabic language.

But as regards the exact nature [of those Attributes they talk about] then they are regarded as being from the unspecific aayahs [mutashaabihaat], because it is not possible for us to know the exact nature [i.e., the ‘how?’] of Allaah’s Dhaat, and following on from that it is not possible for us to know the exact nature of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic’s, Attributes either.

For this reason some of the Imaams of Hadith, like Abu Bakr al-Khateeb [al-Baghdaadi], author of the well-known [encyclopaedia], ‘The History of Baghdaad,’ [said that] the same is said concerning the Attributes as is said concerning [Allaah’s] Esssence/Dhaat, both in negating and affirming, that which is said concerning the Esssence/Dhaat is said concerning the Attributes.

So just as we affirm [Allaah’s] Essence/Dhaat [i.e., His very existence] and we do not deny it–for such a denial is total and utter rejection [of Allaah]–then we say the same about [Allaah’s] Attributes: we affirm them and do not negate them, but just as we do not ask exactly ‘how?’ His Essence/Dhaat is [but still affirm it], then in the same way we do not ask ‘how?’ His Attributes are [but still affirm them].

This is the answer to the question.

الفَتَّاح
Al-Fattaah – (the Judge/the Granter of blessings)

Shaykh ‘Abd ur-Razzaaq al-Badr (hafidhahullaah) comments:

Shaykh ‘Abd ur-Rahmaan bin Sa’dee, rahimahullaah, said: ‘Al-Fattaah has two meanings.

The first meaning is: the One who judges between His slaves, and judges between them with His legislation and by rewarding those who obey (Him) and punishing those who disobey (Him) in the dunyaa and aakhira, as His, ta’aala, statement: {Say: ‘Our Lord will assemble us all together (on the Day of Resurrection), then He will judge between us in truth. And He is the Just Judge, the All-Knower of the true state of affairs’}, and His, ta’aala, statement: {‘Our Lord! Judge between us and our people in truth, for You are the Best of those who give judgment}.

The second meaning is: the One who opens all doors of blessings for His slaves. He, ta’aala, said: {Whatever Allaah grants to people of mercy – none can withhold it}. He grants benefits of the dunyaa and deen to His slaves, and opens the locks upon hearts for those whom He has favored with His Kindness and Care, and showers (the hearts) with knowledge and understanding from Him and realities of faith that rectifiy their conditions and by which they remain upon the Straight Path; and what’s more special is that He grants those who love Him and turn to Him knowledge from Him, spiritual conditions, shining lights and true understanding. And likewise He opens for His slaves the doors of rizq (provision) and the paths of the means, and paves the way for provisions and the means to (these provisions) for the muttaqoon (those who fear Him) from where they can’t imagine, and gives the mutawakkiloon (those who put their trust in Him) beyond what they ask and hope for, and makes easy for them affairs that are difficult, and opens for them doors that are closed.”

Allaah is Al-Qadeer, Al-Qaadir, Al-Muqtadir (The All-Powerful)

Source: Fiqh ul-Asmaa il-Husnaa; Chapter 55, p. 217-220

“Al-Qadeer, al-Qaadir, al-Muqtadir – (the All-Powerful)”

Shaykh ‘Abd ur-Razzaaq al-Badr (hafidhahullaah) comments:

“All of these Names are mentioned in the Qur’aan, and the most-mentioned one is al-Qadeer, then al-Qaadir, then al-Muqtadir. And all of them demonstrate that Power is established as an Attribute of Allaah, and that He, subhaanah, has Absolute Power; so by His Power He brought the creation into being, and by His Power He gives life and gives death, and will resurrect the slaves for recompense, and He will reward the one who did good for his doing good, and the one who did evil for his doing evil, the One who if He wills something, He says to it: Be – and it is; and by His Power He turns the hearts to whatever He wills, and He guides whoever He wills and leads astray whoever He wills.

And due to His Absolute Power, no one can compass any of His Knowledge except what He wills to teach him, and due to His Absolute Power, He created the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them in six days and no fatigue touched Him; and no one from His creation can make Him incapable, the One whose Power is free from fatigue and inability to do what He wants; and due to His Absolute Power, everything is under His disposal, so whatever He wills will be and whatever He doesn’t will will never be.

And indeed for having eemaan (faith) in the Power of Allaah, ‘azza wa jal – which His Names ‘Al-Qadeer, Al-Qaadir, Al-Muqtadir’ demonstrate – there are great effects and blessed fruits that return to the slave in his worldly life and hereafter. Hence, part of its blessed fruits is that it strengthens – in the slave – seeking the help of Allaah; and part of its effects is having complete patience and being well-pleased with Allaah. Ibn ul-Qayyim, rahimahullaah, said: ‘Whoever fills his heart with ridhaa (being pleased) with the Qadr (Decree), Allaah will fill his chest with contentment and He will free his heart for loving Him, turning to Him in repentance and putting his trust in Him; and whoever misses his portion of ridhaa, his heart will be filled with the opposite of that, and he will be distracted from what his happiness and success are in.’

And part of its effects is a person’s safety from the diseases of the hearts such as rancor, envy and the like, because of his belief that all the affairs are by the decree of Allaah, ‘azza wa jal, and that He, subhaanah, is the One who gives His slaves and decrees their provisions for them. So He gives whoever He wills and prevents whoever He wills, as the grace is His Grace, subhaanah, and the gift is His Gift, and this is why it is said about the envious one that he is the enemy of Allaah’s blessing upon His slaves. And part of its effects is always asking Allaah and making a lot of du’aa to Him, because all the affairs are in His Hand.”

“You are the One who puts forward (al-Muqaddim) and
You are the One who puts back (al-Mu’akkhir)
~ Saheeh al-Bukhaari #6317

Shaykh Muhammad bin Saalih al-’Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah) comments:

“Whoever Allaah puts forward (with regard to something), there is none to put him back; and whoever Allaah puts back, there is none to put him forward. If the whole nation gathered to put back that which Allaah has put forward, they will not be able to do that. And if you believe in this, you will rely on Allaah, and all the people will be behind your back, and the One who will be in front of you is who? Allaah, subhaanahu wa ta’aala. ‘You are the One who puts forward and You are the One who puts back’ - the One who puts forward and the One who puts back with regard to situations, times, places, everything.”
