Q.The individual is asking is it permissible for a person to call themselves or their child al-azeez (the mighty)?

A.The shaykh said this is that which a person should abstain from. It is that which a person should abstain from, as it is from the names of Allaah (azza wa ja’aal). However, if an individual is given the title of the azeez of Riyaadh or the azeez of Egypt, meaning the leader/king of Riyaadh or the leader/king of Egypt. This is a title so this is not a problem but this is not the name of the individual.

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al ‘Uthaymeen

With regards to the description of ‘Eesaa ‘alaihissalaam being described as “His Word which He conveyed to Maryam”[1] the Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al ‘Uthaymeen rahimahullaah states:

Allaah applied the (term) “Word” to him because he ‘alaihissalaam was created by means of a word. So the hadeeth is not taken upon its apparent (literal) meaning, since ‘Eesaa ‘alaihissalaam was not a word because he used to eat and drink and pass urine and open his bowels. And all the (usual) human situations would occur to him.

Allaah, the Most High, states:

Indeed the example of ‘Eesaa with Allaah is just as the example of Aadam. He (Allaah) created him from dust then He said to him, “Be!” and he was. [Soorah aale ‘Imraan (3) aayah 59]

And ‘Eesaa ‘alaihissalaam was not the Word of Allaah because the Speech of Allaah is an Attribute existing with Him and not separate and distinct from Him.

As for ‘Eesaa, then he was a being separate and distinct from Allaah subhaanahu ; he would come and go and eat food and drink.

My Young Daughter Constantly asks me,
‘Why can’t we see Allah in this life?’
An Exclusive Translation for Sisters Upon Al-Istiqaamah

Shaykh Al-Fawzan was asked on behalf of a young girl the following question: [1]

My young daughter constantly asks me, ‘Why can’t we see Allah in this life?’ What is the best answer to give her as she is young?

The Shaykh (May Allah preserve him) said,

Say to her, ‘This is because you are not able to see him [in this life]. You would burn to pieces.’ It is not possible for a created being to see Allah in this life. Whereas in the Hereafter Allah gives the believer the strength and ability so he is able to see Allah. Yes.

In another place Shaykh Al-Fawzan mentions: [2]

“The Jahmiyyah and the Mu’tazilah, all of them, reject Ar-Ru’yah (the seeing of Allah) in the Hereafter. Another group exists who say, ‘Verily Allah is seen in this life and in the Hereafter.’ This is a position that is held by some of the Sufis.

The third position, and this is the true and correct stance, is that Allah, the Mighty and Majestic will be seen in the Hereafter by the people of paradise as is found in the ahadeeth that have been narrated upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and which have reached the level of Mutawaatir (such a great number of ahadeeth it is not possible that they have all been invented). However, in this life, then verily Allah cannot be seen because the people cannot endure and survive seeing Him, the Exalted in this life. When Moosa (peace and blessings be upon him) asked to see Allah, the Exalted, in this life, Allaah said:

“And when Moses arrived at Our appointed time and his Lord spoke to him, he said, “My Lord, show me [Yourself] that I may look at You.” [Allāh] said, “You will not see Me, but look at the mountain; if it should remain in place, then you will see Me.” But when his Lord appeared to the mountain, He rendered it level, and Moses fell unconscious. And when he awoke, he said, “Exalted are You! I have repented to You, and I am the first of the believers.” [Al-A’raaf: 143]

The solid mountain became dust due to the Greatness of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. So how can a human being withstand seeing Allah [in this life]?”

Errors of the Rafidah on Tawhid of Allah’s Names and Attributes
by Sheikh Ali ibn Yahya al-Haddaadee

The Rafidah have also deviated in tawhid of Allah’s Names and Attributes. Our creed concerning our Lord can be summarized by everything that He has described Himself with, or His Prophet sall Allahu alaihi wa sallam described Him with, without saying how, giving examples, changing letters, or negating the meanings of words, to the extent of His statement (which translated means):
“There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing.” (Qur’an, 42:10)

However, we find that the Rafidah do not affirm this great principle, and along those lines, they have given their leaders some of the attributes of the Creator, if not all of them. From these is the attribute of perfect knowledge, as we, Ahl us Sunnah, believe that Allah has perfect knowledge which befits His Majesty — knowledge which is not preceded by ignorance, nor overtaken by forgetfulness – - knowledge which encompasses everything that has existed, exists now, or will exist in the future, and that which will never exist or would exist if things were a certain way, as Allah Most High said (what translated means);

“Verily, Allah is the All-Knower of everything.” (Qur’an, 8:75)

“All-Knower of the unseen and the seen.” (Qur’an, 6:73)

“But if they were returned (to the world), they would certainly revert to that which they were forbidden.” (Qur’an, 6:25)

“And with Him are the keys of the Ghaib (all that is hidden), none knows them but He. And He knows whatever there is in (or on) the earth and in the sea; not a leaf falls, but he knows it. There is not a grain in the darkness of the earth nor anything fresh or dry, but is written in a Clear Record.” (Qur’an, 6:59)

“[Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] said: ‘What about the generations of old?’ [Musa (Moses)] said: ‘The knowledge thereof is with my Lord, in a Record. My Lord is neither unaware nor He forgets.’” (Qur’an, 20:51-2)

…until the rest of them.

As for the Rafidah’s view, then they have set up partners for Him in knowledge of the unseen — even knowledge of all things!

In Bihar al-Anwar, by al-Majlisee, on the authority of Ja’far as-Sadiq alaihi assalaam, who said: “By Allah, I have been given knowledge of the very first and the very last. So a man from amongst his companions said: May I be made your ransom, do you have knowledge of the unseen? He said: woe be to you, I certainly know what is in the loins of men and the wombs of women… by Allah, if I wanted to count for you every pebble on it, I could certainly tell you (that).” (Bihar al-Anwar. 28, 26/27)

And in al-Kaafee: “From Abdullah ibn Bashr reporting from Abu Abdullah, he said: surely, I know what is in the heavens and what is on the earth, and I know what is in Paradise and I know what is in the Fire, and I know what has been and what will be. He said: then he waited a moment and saw that this was having a major effect on those who heard it, so he said: I know all this from the Book of Allah azza wa jall. Verily, Allah ta`aalaa said: in it is the explanation of all things.” (al-Kaafee 1/261)

Exalted is Allah, High and Magnificent, over what the wrong-doers say! I say: in this text is a twisting of the noble verse when he quoted the verse (which translated means):

“And We have sent down to you the Book (the Quran) as an exposition of everything, a guidance, a mercy, and glad tidings for those who have submitted themselves (to Allah as Muslims).” (Qur’an, 16:89)

And how amazing it is that he claims to know everything, then he does not know the text of the verse which he is trying to prove his knowledge of everything with. And I swear by Allah that Abu Abdullah is free from this slander. Rather, he rejected the Rafidah and considered them to be stupid. So let yourself be amazed at this foolishness as much as you want to be amazed!

We will not fail to direct the noble reader’s attention that at the same time the Rafidah are attributing knowledge of everything to their leaders, they are also claiming that Allah azza wa jall is ignorant and that some affairs are hidden from Him, and that knowledge can occur to Him of what He doesn’t know. Exalted is Allah over that, High and Magnificent. This, what they call al-bidaa’, is a belief of the Jews — and the Jews who distorted (the Scripture) are the first root of the tree of the Rafidah, as is known to the just — and on the issue of al-bidaa’, it is reported by the author of al-Kaafee, on the authority of al-Rayyan ibn al-Salat who said: “I heard al-Rida say: Allah never sent any prophet except that he forbade alcohol and affirmed for Allah al-bidaa’.” (al-Kaafee, 1/148).

Transcription by: Umm Yusuf min Sri Lanka

The third fundamental : Belief in the names and perfect attributes of Allaah

The third fundamental that is found in this hadith, “that the slave should believe in the names of Allaah, the beautiful names of Allaah and the perfect attributes of Allaah that have been found in the Qur’aan and the Sunnah and he should use them to supplicate to Allaah سبحان وتعلى.

As Allaah, He said in the Qur’aan,

“وَلِلّهِ الأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَى فَادْعُوهُ بِهَا

And Allaah سبحان وتعلى has the most beautiful Names. So call upon Him by them”
(Surah al A’raf v. 180)

And Allaah said in the Qur’aan,

“Invoke Allaah or invoke the Most Merciful, by whatever Name of His you call upon Him or you invoke Him by, it is the same as to Him belong the most beautiful Names.”

Because the Shaykh he mentions that the servant the greater amount of knowledge that the servant has about Allaah and His Names and His Attributes then the greater khashiyah the greater his fear will be of Allaah سبحان وتعلى and the more mindful he will be of Allaah سبحان وتعلى and this will cause him to distance himself from disobeying Allaah سبحان وتعلى and falling into that which Allaah dislikes.

As some of the salaf they used to say, “Whoever knows Allaah سبحان وتعلى the best then he will be the one who fears Allaah سبحان وتعلى the most.” And the Shaykh he said, “that is why one of the greatest things that will banish this anxiety and worry and sadness that the slave, he knows his Lord. That the slave he knows his Lord سبحان وتعلى.”

And as I say to you brothers and sisters just pausing here with regards to some of the benefits of knowing Allaah سبحان وتعلى and knowing his Names and His Attributes. So we can understand the statement of some of the salaf when they used to say, “(Arabic) the more the person knows Allaah the more he will fear Allaah سبحان وتعلى.”

If we believe brothers and sisters that Allaah سبحان وتعلى is Samiun, Basheerun, Aleemun, the All-Seeing, the All-Hearing, All-Knowing, and that nothing in the heavens and the earth is hidden from Him and that Allaah سبحان وتعلى knows that which is done in private and that which is hidden and He knows even when a person blinks their eye and that which a person hides in their chest, if we believe that Allaah سبحان وتعلى is like this, then how will He cause us to believe. He will cause us to constantly be mindful of Allaah, that Allaah sees us, He will cause us to control our tongue, it will cause us to safeguard our body parts and prevent them from disobeying Allaah. It will cause us to monitor our hearts, and try and protect our hearts from everything that is not pleasing to Allaah.

Ibn Rajab رحمح الله تعلىhe mentioned in his book Sharh Kalimatul Ikhlas. And look brothers and sisters this is the effect of knowing the Names and Attributes of Allaah عزّ وجل, he said, (Arabic) a man on one occasion he tried to seduce a woman (Arabic) and they were in an open barren space meaning it was just them, a dark night, a dark place in a barren land, desert land, nothing was there, just them but then, the woman refused, why did she refuse? And how did the man respond? (Arabic) The man said, “(Arabic) Nothing can see us except for the stars.” She said, “Where is the one Who created the stars?” So look at the effect of knowing the Names of Allaah سبحان وتعلى meaning Allaah سبحان وتعلى, He sees us. As Allaah سبحان وتعلى says in the Qur’aan,

أَلَمْ يَعْلَمْ بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ يَرَى

Does he not know that Allaah sees. Surah al Alaq v. 14

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِالْمِرْصَادِ

Verily, your Lord is Ever Watchful (over them). Surah al Fajr v. 14

وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ

Fear Allaah! Verily Allaah is the All-Hearing the All-Knowing. Surah al Hujurat v. 1

And Allaah سبحان وتعلى says in the Qur’aan,

اعْمَلُوا مَا شِئْتُمْ إِنَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ

“Do that which you desire, Allaah sees everything that you do.” Surah Fussilat v. 40

So if a person has this belief in the Names and Attributes of Allaah they will be mindful of Allaah عزّ وجل. If the slave knows that Allaah سبحان وتعلى is the Most Merciful, the Most Beneficent, ar Rahman, ar Raheem, al Kareem the Most Generous, then whenever they sin, whenever they fall short, then they know they can always return back to Allaah عزّ وجل and repent. Again, not like the creation, because the creation we love to be pardoned but we do not pardon, how many times do you find in life we may make a mistake and a person will never let you forget that mistake. Twenty years will pass and they will remind you of it. Thirty years will pass and they will remind you of it, even if you changed your life, Alhamdulillah Allaah is ar Raheem, al Ghafoor the All-Forgiving, not like the creation because the creation they are weak, and they are oppressive. We love to be pardoned but we don’t pardon, we love for our faults to be hidden, we but we don’t hide peoples faults. We love to be shown mercy but we don’t show mercy. Alhamdulillah if we know Allaah عزّ وجل we won’t pay any attention to the creation. We won’t turn and try and please the creation, because we will turn to Allaah because Allaah is al Ghafoor, He is the All-Forgiving.

Allaah سبحان وتعلى is the one who accepts repentance that is why, the one who repents from a sin is like the one who has no sin. Your slate is washed clean. Not like that person behind you who tries to constantly put you down, and remind you of that time when you slipped. People slip in life, people err in life, people fall short in life, when a person sins and makes a mistake. There is either one of two ways you can go. For the slave that knows that Allaah عزّ وجل is the Most Merciful, the Most Beneficent. The one that knows that Allaah عزّ وجل loves the people who make taubah,

إِنَّ اللّهَ يُحِبُّ التَّوَّابِينَ وَيُحِبُّ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ

Allaah loves those who purify themselves. Surah al Baqarah v. 222

The one who knows this Alhamdulillah, he will take the path of Aadam عليهِ صلات وسّلام and repent to Allaah عزّ وجل taubatan nasoohah with the sincere correct repentance, and Insha Allahu ta’ala he will walk upon that same path that that was trodden by Adam عليهِ صلات وسّلام and Insha Allaah that path will lead to al Jannah.

However, another person who maybe ignorant or he maybe arrogant he may follow the path of Iblis and may Allaah سبحان وتعلى protect all of us from that path. Because Iblis he was haughty and arrogant and he didn’t want to admit his mistake and that path it leads to the Hellfire. Wal iyaadu billah

So brothers and sisters from this knowing the names and attributes of Allaah we will never despair of the mercy of Allaah عزّ وجل. Never! If we do something that we feel bad about and we regret don’t look to the creation to please them, turn to your Lord who forgives all sin. Turn to Him sincerely and beg His forgiveness and don’t worry about that person who tries to put you down and censor you and blame you even though you may have repented even though you may have changed.

Also brothers and sisters from knowing the Names and Attributes of Allaah سبحان وتعلى because in the dua that Prophet صلّى اللَّهُ عليه وسلّم he said, “I ask You by every name belonging to You, which You have named Yourself, or You have revealed in Your Book, or You taught one of Your creation, or You have preserved in knowledge of that Name with You in the Unseen another benefit of knowing the Names of Allaah and this has a benefit on you and an effect upon the servant and the servitude of a servant if the slave he knows that Allaah عزّ وجل is Just and if the slave he knows that Allaah سبحان وتعلى becomes angry at those people who are disobedient and Allaah سبحان وتعلى punishes those people who are disobedient then this should cause the slave to be fearful of Allaah سبحان وتعلى as Allaah عزّ وجل

He said in the Qur’aan,

وَاتَّقُواْ اللّهَ وَاعْلَمُواْ أَنَّ اللّهَ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ

Fear Allaah and know that Allaah is severe in His punishment.” Surah al Baqarah v. 196

And Allaah سبحان وتعلى He tells in the Qur’aan

وَاتَّقُواْ اللّهَ وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّكُمْ إِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَ

Fear Allaah and know that you will be resurrected and you will be gathered before Him . Surah al Baqarah v. 203

If this servant knows Allaah and the Perfection of Allaah سبحان وتعلى and the Beauty of Allaah سبحان وتعلى then this will cause them to love Allaah عزّ وجل in a special way and this will cause them to have a great yearning to meet Allaah سبحان وتعلى and we know brothers and sisters “(Arabic) Whoever loves to meet Allaah, Allaah loves to meet him”. So these are some of the effects mentioned by some of the people of knowledge in their books that knowing the names and attributes of Allaah عزّ وجل has an effect upon the servant’s life.

And again this hadith is a proof brothers and sisters that Allaah عزّ وجل has more than 99 names as the Prophet صلّى اللَّهُ عليه وسلّم said, “I ask You by every name belonging to You, and a few lines later, those names which You have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You.” So Allaah عزّ وجل has more than 99 names, names that He has kept hidden with Him in the unseen.

Shaykh Muḥummed Emān Ibn ‘Alī al-Jāmī said:

It seems like we are always repeating the topic of the Mu’tazilah. As what the common folk always say “We are exhuming the graves”, we speak about the dead …No. The Mu’tazilah still exist. All of the shi’ah sects, from the extremists and the non extremists. Also some of the Khawaarij such as the ‘Ibaadiyyah. All of them are on the creed of the Mu’tazilah. Every shi’ah. And the shi’ah are currently present. They surroundus and they are in our proximity. The learnt ones from amongst them that are on the creed of the I’tazaal (those whom withdrew) – they don’t believe in anything from the Attributes of Allaah (ta’aala) except for the names that are indeterminate and without any meaning. They say He (Allaah) is knowledgeable and without knowledge. Or they say “He is Aware (Knowledgeable)” and His knowledge can’t be proven.
